How It Works

The Blueprint experience allows couples to immediately deploy and practice the skills that they will learn with us. By moving therapy out of the professional office, into a setting that better mimics your home life, you will be better able to transfer learned skills to your day-to-day life.

A great marriage isn’t something that just happens; it’s something that must be created.

introductory video session

Once you have committed to a particular retreat date, your dedicated clinician will schedule a 90-minute video session with you. The session is designed to help the clinician begin to get to know you/your partner and your specific goals. The clinician will also decide, based on your needs, the appropriate curriculum for your stay. You will also discuss your preferred timing and the activities of interest to you.

RETREAT SCHEDULE

The retreat schedule itself will include:

  • an introductory/orientation meeting
  • the opportunity for each member of the couple to speak individually for 60 minutes with the clinician
  • the therapeutic work designed to help you and your partner to develop and put into action a blueprint of your relationships and its needs
  • the retreat ends with a discussion of your experience and your future at-home commitments to the work that we have undertaken

A customized itinerary will be sent to you for your approval in advance of your arrival.

follow-up video session

At the completion of the retreat, we will schedule with you a 60-minute video follow-up session, which will occur one month after your departure from the retreat. This session is intended to reinforce your blueprint and the ongoing work that you have committed to undertake at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Day One (afternoon) – early afternoon arrival; an orientation session / 3.5 hours of therapy, followed by dinner on your own

Day Two (all day) – 3.5 hours of therapy, followed by an afternoon couple activity, followed by dinner on your own

Day Three (morning) – 3.5 hours of therapy / a review and future planning session/early afternoon departure

Couple retreats, which move you through months of therapy in a matter of days, are successful because: (i) couples report that the momentum gained in this format is a critical component to generating hope: the more the couple feels results, the more stamina that they have to dig deeper into the hard, yet rewarding work; (ii) couples who are experiencing significant distress have their concerns addressed immediately, as opposed to over a course of months, and (iii) couples who otherwise cannot attend therapy, due to scheduling issues, are now able to make their relationship a priority.

Although not our experience, it is reported that the dropout rate in traditional couple therapy is high; as a result, the couple’s goals often remain unmet. With our model, couples depart with tangible results and tools to achieve immediate, ongoing success.

Midweek retreats run from Tuesday at midday until Thursday at midday. Weekend retreats run from Friday at midday until Sunday at midday. We will speak with you directly about the exact timings that best suit your schedule. For instance, some couples prefer to arrive in the evening on Day One and undertake the first block of therapy that evening, as opposed to going out to dinner.

Please contact us for our current rates. Our rates consider the cost of comparable therapy undertaken on a traditional basis.

The fee includes (i) an initial 90-minute introductory video call with your dedicated clinician, (ii) 10.5 hours of in-person therapy, (iii) a 60-minute follow-up video call one month after the completion of the retreat (for a total of 13.0 hours of therapy), (iv) your waterfront accommodation for two nights; and (v) your meals (specifically, lunch on Days One, Two, and Three, as well as breakfast on Days Two and Three of your stay.)

Please note that the cost of your evening meals is not included in this fee.

A fifty percent (50%) deposit is due at the time that you select the dates of your retreat. The remainder of the payment is due fifteen (15) days before your chosen date. Payment may be made by Zelle, Venmo, Paypal, credit/debit card, or check.

Our model may be used whether you have never been to couple therapy or if you are seeking an adjunctive treatment to the work that you are doing with your couple therapist. We will gladly work with your current therapist(s) – individual and/or couple therapist – before and after your retreat in order to maximize the value of the work that you do at Blueprint.

We have experience helping couples develop skills to address the following issues: (1) communication issues/better understanding your partner’s point of view/motivations, (2) repetitive/chronic conflict, including unresolved anger/resentment, (3) lack of balance/failure to prioritize your partner/relationship, (4) destructive behavior in the relationship, including substance abuse and verbal abuse; and, (5) infidelity or lack of trust/commitment.

Further, we have experience dealing with specific topics, such as (1) parenting challenges, including the decision of whether or not to have children/to adopt/to undertake IVF, (2) financial concerns in the relationship, (3) unfulfilled sexual desire, (4) consideration of an open relationship, and (5) the stress of unconventional choices (such as the decision to not have children).

We will teach you concrete skills to navigate present and future challenges to your relationship.

All participants will have the option to continue couple therapy in a manner that best suits them: for certain couples, this is weekly couple therapy, but, for most, it is less frequent meetings. Some couples opt instead to do a one-day refresher retreat (held on Mondays) after 6 to 12 months. Many couples feel as though the current experience accomplished their goals and no further intervention is required.

It is common for one party in the couple to be more reticent about participating in the process. To this end, we encourage couples in this situation to book with us an introductory call. This video call is 90-minutes in length, and its purpose is twofold: first, we will speak directly with the party who is reticent about the process and address his/her/their concerns directly. Second, if the couple opts to participate in the retreat, this call will serve as the first step in the process.

For couples who wish to undertake this call, the fee is $425.00. This amount will be credited against the fee for those couples who, following the call, opt to schedule a retreat. To schedule this call, please contact us at 212.203.3118.

We understand that many of our clients are anxious when they arrive. Some individuals worry about being uncomfortable/shamed; some worry about being blamed for the couple’s troubles; a few worry that the experience may leave the relationship in a worse place than where it presently stands. We are well-equipped to settle these fears, and we control for all of these valid concerns.

For you and your partner to get the most out of the experience, we ask the following of you: a willingness to work hard, a willingness to share emotion, an effort to be patient with one another during the experience, a true effort to consider one’s own contribution to the couple’s overall struggles, an effort to work hard not to get lost in small details/to not debate each small point, and, an effort to push against the need to be “right”.

No, we do not allow couples to bring their children or their pets. While we appreciate that this will require some additional logistical planning before the retreat, this decision is motivated by our wish for the couple to be exclusively oriented to one another for the duration of your stay and to have as few distractions as is feasible.

The environment is casual – we want you to feel at home in the retreat space.  Please pack according to the season; comfortable, layered clothing is encouraged.  For those couples visiting us during the summer season, we encourage you to bring bathing suits (beach towels will be provided). Regardless of the season, we also encourage you to bring specific sporting equipment, such as tennis racquets, if this will be part of your experience. Additional recommended items include a sleep mask, shoes for beach walks and phone chargers.

We will not work with (i) couples in which physical violence is present in the home and/or at the retreat, and (ii) clients who are abusive/belittling to our staff. In such instances, the clinician reserves the right to end the retreat experience. In such cases, no refund will be issued.

Our goal is to pull a couple out of the usual demands of their life so that they may orient to one another for the duration of the retreat.  For many couples, it has been years since they have had this time alone together. To that end, to the extent feasible, we encourage couples to limit contact with third parties during their stay.

Further, in order to get the full benefit of the retreat experience, we encourage couples to refrain from using alcohol or drugs for one week prior to, as well as during, their stay.  For the retreat to be as successful as possible, we want our couples well-rested and ready to dedicate themselves to the work at hand.
